Inspection Appointment
Certificate of Compliance –Smoke detector and Carbon Monoxide Alarms ( 26F, 26F ½)
1. Please test all of your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they operate BEFORE the inspection. Your permit/ certificate will be issued on site, pending approval of the fire inspector.
2. Smoke detectors shall be installed in the following manner : an approved smoke detector shall be installed on the ceiling of each stairway leading to the floor above , near the base of , but not within each stairway and an approved smoke detector shall be installed on the ceiling outside each separate sleeping area
3. Carbon Monoxide Alarms shall be located in each level of each dwelling unit including habitable portions of basements, cellars, and attics. They shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Carbon Monoxide alarms installed on the level of the sleeping area shall be installed in the hallway outside of the sleeping area not to exceed ten ( 10 ) feet in any direction from any bedroom door **** Combination alarms must have a simulated voice and alarm
4. A Number Must be on the House at the Time of the Inspection. Your permit/certificate cannot be issued unless the number is present , as required by M.G.L. Chapter 148 , Section 59

Please be advised that as of April 5th 2010, The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm requirements for one and two family residences will be changing. Any Certificate of Compliance signed after that date will need to meet the new regulation. This new regulation applies to homes built prior to 1975. Smoke detectors are required as follows:
- On every habitable level of the residence
- On the ceiling at the base of each stairway
- On the ceiling outside of each separate sleeping area
- The smoke detectors may be either hard wired, battery powered , or a combination of the two
- If the smoke detector is located within twenty feet of a kitchen or a bathroom( containing a bathtub or a shower), the smoke detector will be required to be a photoelectric detector
- If the smoke detector is outside of the twenty foot regulation regarding a kitchen or a shower, you must use either: a dual detector (containg both ionization and photoelectric technology or two separate detectors (one photoelectric, one ionization.
Carbon Monoxide alarms are required as follows:
- On every level of the residence, including the basement only if it is habitable.
- A carbon monoxide detector must be located within ten feet of each bedroom door, not inside the bedroom
- Combination detectors (photoelectric smoke and carbon monoxide detectors may be used if the detector is within twenty feet of a kitchen or a bathroom ( containing a bathtub or a shower)
- Combination detectors ( ionization smoke and carbon monoxide detector) may be used if the detector is outside of the twenty foot rule regarding kitchens and bathrooms
- May be either battery powered, plug in with battery back up , hard wired with battery backup, or system type
*Any homes built prior to 1991 MUST replace all the hard wire detectors prior to receiving a Certificate of Compliance
