Hazardous Waste
Many materials fall in the category of Hazardous Waste and should not be disposed of with regular household waste. Some of these items, even in small quantities, can pose significant risks to trash truck drivers, and landfill operators. A vast majority of the fires that occur in trash trucks and at landfills can be traced to improperly disposed of hazardous waste.

Batteries and Cell Phones

Rechargeable Batteries often contain hazardous elements such as mercury, cadmium or arsenic.  Bring to the DPW on the third Saturday of any month.
Ni-Cd and Other Rechargeable Batteries – cordless phone, laptop computer, power tools, electric tooth brush, beeper, etc.
Button Batteries – hearing aid, watch, calculator
Specialty Batteries – lithium camera batteries and other specialty batteries
Cell phones – the battery, the phone, and all accessories can be recycled, Postage paid mailers can be picked up a the DPW during regular office hours, or by emailing recycle@townofnorthandover, the mailer will be sent directly to your home.   

Automobile Batteries

Automobile batteries are collected at DPW on the third Saturday of each month for a fee of $2.  Many local auto parts stores.

Do not recycle

Alkaline batteries (regular A, AA, AAA, C, D, 9volt) are not hazardous and should be disposed of at home with your regular trash



Waste Oil

Waste oil is very damaging to our waterways and ground water when not disposed of property.  You have several disposal options:
Retail stores which sell motor oil are required to take back used motor oil if you have a receipt.  The law provides for a limit of 2 gallons per person per day.  You can call the Used Oil Hotline with questions or to report retailers who are unwilling to accept used oil from customers who have a receipt -- (617) 556-1022.

Household Hazardous Waste Days

North Andover provides its residents with 2 comprehensive collection events each year, on the third Saturday of April and October.  The next event is scheduled for Saturday April 19th, 2008 at the DPW yard located at 384 Osgood Street 9am until 1pm.

Unacceptable Materials and How to Dispose of each
Alkaline Batteries
Dispose of with regular household trash
Asbestos
Look in the Yellow Pages under Asbestos Removal for a licensed contractor
Construction Waste
(including railroad ties, shingles, dry wall, etc.)

Call a private hauler
Explosives
Call the Fire Department at 978-688-9590
Fire extinguishers
Dispose of at local fire station
Hypodermic needles
Place in a puncture-proof container (such as a liquid detergent container) with a screw-on lid and dispose of with your regular trash
Smoke Dectors
May be disposed of with your regular trash or mailed back to the manufacturer.  Manufacturer's address may be found on the underside of the unit.



If you miss Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Day

If you are not able to wait until the next free HHW event because you are moving for instance, or if you just missed an event and really want to rid you home of your hazardous waste, you now have two options:
Veridium Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off in Lowell -- appointment is required.  See below for pricing and location
Minuteman Household Hazardous Products Facility in Lexington.  See below for pricing and location

Veridium Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off
An appointment is required.  Plese call Kevin Poulin @ 978-453-7772, Monday through Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm
Refer to the list of Accepted and Not Accepted at our Household Hazardous Waste Days.  The same applies to using Veridium.
Pricing:  $5 per gallon or pound.  Cash and check are both accepted for payment.
Car batteries are $5 each

Veridium is also known as Jones Environmental.  They are located at 263 Howard Street, at the corner of Tanner and Howard Streets; it is a beige building.  The truck entrance is located on Tanner Street before the corner.  the visitor entrance is located around the corner on the Howard Street side.
    
Minuteman Household Hazardous Products Facility in Lexington

   60 Hartwell Avenue,  Lexington, MA

   Open April through November from 9:00am to 2:00pm, the 2005 schedule:

November 5

You will need to provide identification, and a check to cover the fee which is $60 for a full carload (12 to 25 gallons or pounds) and $30 for a half carload (up to 12 gallons or pounds). Cash and credit cards are not accepted.  Latex paint is NOT accepted.

DIRECTIONS:  From Rte 128S take exit 31 (Rte 4/225 heading toward Bedford).  At the first light take a right, via jug handle, onto Hartwell Avenue.  The site is 1/4 mile down on the left just after the bike path at the composting facility.
